Obituary for Curtis Wright Van Horn

Curt was born in Ft. Smith, Ark. He was the seventh child of Mary Wright and Lynn Allen Van Horn. The family moved to Ada, OK where he graduated in 1954 from Horace Mann High School at East Central State College. After high School graduation, Curt Joined the US Army. He served with the 504th Airborne Infantry Regiment as Company Supply Sgt. at Ft Bragg, N.C. from 1954 -1957. He Served as Intelligence Analyst for the US Army Security Agency in 1958 and as intelligence analyst for the 10th group First Special Forces 80th Special Operations Unit in 1962 at Bad Tolz, Germany.
Curt graduated from Central State College in Edmond, OK with a BA degree in 1964 and a MA degree in 1969. He received his doctorate degree in Secondary School Administration in 1978. Dr. Van Horn retired from Crooked Oak School District in 1987 after 23 years of service as teacher, Counselor, Administrator, Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent. He also served as adjunct professor at Oklahoma City University and the University of Southern Mississippi, Gulf Coast Campus. He was a member of the American Assoc. of School Administrators and the international Reading Assoc. In 1987 Dr. Van Horn took a job with the US department of Education in Washington DC. He served as Regional Team Leader for the states of WA, OR, MT, WY, ID, and AK. He retired in 1997.
Curt is survived by his wife of 33 years, Nancy, of the home; his son Erik Van Horn of Broken Arrow, OK; his step-son, Jay Beavers of Ft. Myers, FL. He is also survived by sisters, Patricia Roberts of Okla City, Raye Walraven of Pascagoula, MS and Faye Tackett of Jacksonville, FL, sister-in-law, Virginia Van Horn-Ingraham (Ken) and Brother-in-law, Dr. John Kamp (Cylia). Also missing him are many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Mary Wright and Lynn Allen Van Horn of Ada, OK, Brother, Oscar Van Horn, brother Lynn Allen (L.A.) and sister-in-law Delores Van Horn of Eufaula, OK, brother Wilbur Van Horn of Norman, OK, and sister, Virginia Macias of Guymon, OK.
A service to celebrate the life of Curtis Van Horn will be held on Sunday, July 31, 2016 at 3:00Pm at Vondel L. Smith and Son Mortuary –North.
