Obituary for Oscar John Esser Jr.

Oscar John Esser Jr.
Oscar John Esser Jr., age 89, passed away on August 20, 2016. He was born on December 5, 1926 in New Ulm, Minnesota to Dr. Oscar and Florence Esser. He grew up in Gibbon, Minnesota and graduated from New Ulm High School. John enlisted in the service after high school and proudly served his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from St. Thomas University and attended the University of Miami law school.
On August 14, 1954, John married Phyllis Haugen. To this union two daughters were born, Martha and Linda. John’s career in insurance took him and his family to Florida, Illinois, Oklahoma, Texas and California. He was dedicated to his profession and worked hard throughout his career.
An avid sports fan, John played football, basketball, and baseball in high school. He also played minor league baseball. Later in life he especially enjoyed watching his two grandsons participate in sports. He could be heard cheering them on louder than anyone else.
John also enjoyed travel. His favorite places to visit were Banff Canada and Mexico. He often took nephews, nieces, and other family members with him on his adventures.
Through the years Schatzi, John’s miniature dachshund, was his constant companion and loyal friend.
Several years ago John became reacquainted with an old high school friend, Mary Senescall. He looked forward to talking to her daily, visiting her in Minnesota and traveling with her.
John is preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Esser; his daughter, Linda Esser; and his brother, Robert Esser.
He is survived by his sister Eileen Haima of Minnesota, sister-in-law Gerry Esser of Arizona; his daughter Martha Esser Bradford and husband Kent Bradford of Oklahoma City; grandson Sam Bradford and wife Emma; grandson Chase Nottingham of Denver, Colorado; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be held on Friday, September 2, 2016 at 10:00 AM at Vondel L. Smith & Son North Colonial Chapel. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the charity of your choice.
