Obituary for Doris Elaine Koloen

Doris Elaine Koloen
Doris Elaine Muir Koloen, 96 passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 17 with family by her side. She was born November 15, 1920 in Strabane Township, Inkster, North Dakota. Her husband Reynold W. Koloen preceded her in death as did her sister Jean and parents Gerald and Matilda Collins Muir. Three children and brother Glenn (Sally) Muir, Houston, TX and sister-in-law Helen Koloen Bakken, Los Gatos, CA survive Doris.

Doris’ teaching career spanned more than 40 years. After graduating from Mayville State Teacher’s College in 1942, Doris taught at Inkster High, Binford High, McHenry High and Estabrook, a one-room school of grades 1-8 with a teacherage house next door. At McHenry High she coached the girls’ basketball team to the state tournament. Her teaching career continued in Carrington and Amenia, both in North Dakota. While raising her three children and working full-time, Doris enrolled at Moorhead State University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1965. She was offered a teaching position in Fargo which she could not accept because her husband was transferred to Wichita and then to Oklahoma City. She taught in both of those cities and completed her Master of Arts degree at Wichita State. She spent the remainder of her career as a reading specialist in Western Oaks Middle School until her retirement in 1986.

Doris was a gifted pianist, loved music, ballroom dancing and politics. She loved teaching and the relationships she formed with her students.

Three children survive: daughter Sheren (Jim) Rogne, Champlin, MN, sons Rodney Koloen, Oklahoma City and Steven (Danette) Koloen, Tulsa. Grandchildren are Janna (Jeff) McCauley, Peachtree City, GA, Christine (Peter) Melchert, St. Paul, MN, Scot Jennifer) Koloen, Edmond, OK, Stephanie Liske, Guthrie, OK, Shawn Koloen, Guthrie, OK, Lindsay (Chris) Beard, Collinsville, OK and Landon Koloen, Houston, TX. There are thirteen great-grandchildren and eight nieces and nephews, all of whom have been very special to Doris.
