The lighting of a Memorial Candle not only provides a gesture of sympathy and support to the immediate family during their time of need but also provides the gift of extending the Book of Memories for future generations.

Those boys!

I remember a day, many years ago, at Crane Lake.  It was a dry summer and fire was always on people's minds, expecially in East Bay.  With no roads to East Bay a fire would mean getting as many people together as possible and forming a bucket brigade to try to put it out.

Across the field and up the hill from our cabin, our Mom had gone to Lil Levant's home to help her with her hair.  She brought the 3 youngest (at the time) with her.  I often stayed in Lil's house so I stayed inside while the 2 boys (Chuck and Curt) went out to play.  The boys were probably 4-5 at the time.

Chuck and Curt found an opening under the house and crawled in.  They also found dry twigs and matches and decided to light a fire!  Fortunately, a breeze came up and blew the smoldering, fire smoke right past the window our Mom was standing at.

She screamed "FIRE" and ran outside.  She opened the cubby door where the boys were and put out the small fire.  She then grabbed the first child she could get her hands on (which happened to be Chuck) and the closest stick she could find (which happened to be a 2X4) and proceeded to whap him on the butt.  She then reached out for Curt.  But, after seeing what was happening to his brother he was already crying.  I don't think he got quite the "licking" Chuck did.

Needless to say, they never tried that again but those two boys were ALWAYS into something!  What one didn't think of, the other did.
