John’s celebration of life will be held on Thursday, August 24th at 2pm at Church of the Servant, Oklahoma City with a reception to follow.

John Lewis Bumps passed away peacefully on August 17th at his home in Oklahoma City with his family by his side. Born July 30, 1949 to Edson and Lois in Chicago, he spent most of his childhood in Indiana. He graduated high school in 1967 and went to Indiana State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics fulfilling his passion for numbers. John enlisted in the Fifth US Army in March 1971, married his first wife, Cher, and completed his duty as an Army Reserve. His family moved to Oklahoma City in 1977 for a job promotion with Wilson Foods Corp. It is here where he fell in love with the Sooner State, raising his beloved daughters, Ryanne and Emily. John then met the love of his life, Sherri (Hope), spending over 20 blessed years together.

A strong swimmer, soccer coach, avid golfer and huge Boomer Sooner supporter, John was an enthusiastic sports fan and natural athlete. He loved dancing with Sherri as a member/treasurer at the Mayfair Dance Club and spent Friday nights socializing with his card group friends. A dedicated provider and loyal employee, John worked over 36 years at Tyson Foods. He was a die-hard Republican, enjoyed political debate and was especially patriotic. A man of faith, John was a devoted member of Church of the Servant and volunteered at Whiz Kids Oklahoma. But the real essence of John was the value he placed on family. Referred to as “Papa and Meme” with Sherri, he adored spending time with his 11 grandchildren. His favorite place to relax and retire was at their family Lake Eufaula home on Hope Point where he took great pride in boating the kids and taking care of the property. Family was John’s top priority and we will truly miss his positive spirit, sense of humor, fun-loving nature and enormous presence he had on our lives.

John is survived by his wife, Sherri; daughters, Ryanne and family (Mike Frease), Sadie and Fletcher; Emily and family (Jon Ross), Jordan and Tucker; stepchildren, Toby Cotton and his family, Amanda, Hayley, Abbey, Jeremiah and Benjamin; Callie Homsey and her family, Jason, Hayden, Jackson and Jake; sister Carlene Carmen and brother-in-law, John; sister-in-law Linda Branam and brother-in-law John; and former wife, Cher.

We are grateful for Dr. Hassan Hatoum and the staff at Stephenson Cancer Center as well as the wonderful caretaking of Melissa Hyde and staff at Alpha Hospice. John’s celebration of life will be held on Thursday, August 24th at 2pm at Church of the Servant, Oklahoma City with a reception to follow. Please consider donations to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. May our father, husband, papa and friend’s memory forever be a blessing.
