Obituary for Myrl Stuart Kirk

Myrl “Stuart” Kirk, Jr., born on Christmas day 1929 in Enid, Oklahoma was the second child of Myrl and Pauline Anna (Woodson) Kirk.

Stuart graduated from Enid High School and proceeded to the University of Oklahoma where he participated in the Naval ROTC program. Stuart earned a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s Degree in Petroleum geology from OU. Following graduation, Stuart began his Naval career serving aboard the USS Valley Forge aircraft carrier during the Korean War. On July 3, 1953 Stuart married his college sweetheart, Ruth Carolyn Stewart in Okmulgee, Oklahoma.

After an honorable discharge, Stuart went to work for Continental Oil, Co. as a geologist. Stuart continued to work as a geological consultant well past retirement with companies such as Conoco and Anson Corp. Searching for oil reserves and studying rock formations was Stuart’s life-long passion.

After several early moves, Stuart and Carolyn settled in OKC where they raised their family and were active in their community, including Church and Masonic work at Lodge #36. Stuart was also a life-long member of the AAPG (American Association of Petroleum Geologists) and was President of the OKC Geological Society as well as director of their Library for many years. Additionally, Stuart served as the Scoutmaster of local Boy Scout Troop 93 for several years with his two sons. Stuart will be dearly missed by his wife, children, and grandchildren who will carry the memory of his wisdom and unfailing humor close to their hearts.

Stuart was preceded in death by his parents; his son, David Woodson Kirk on June 1, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carolyn; his daughter, Dr. Mary Wenger and her husband Dr. Matthew Wenger; his son, Tom Kirk and his wife Hilary; his sisters, Nora Ruth Pingleton and her husband Gene of Tahlequah, OK and Paula Banks of Phoenix, AZ; his grandchildren, George Ford Kirk, Anna Kirk, Callie Kirk and husband Alex Webb, Ted Prince, Mark Prince, David Wenger, Colin Wenger, Rachel Wenger, Teodora Kirk, Sofia Kirk and Giorgia Kirk.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 28th in Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. Pivate interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
