Obituary for E. Lavonne (Hickey) Hatfield

Evelynn Lavonne Hatfield was born to Ernest and Bertha Hickey on July 30, 1923 in Norge, OK. She was called home by the Lord on May 4, 2018 after a 95-year journey in this life.

Throughout her time with us, Lavonne blazed her own path in the world. Before she graduated high school from Capitol Hill in 1938, she was known for designing her own clothes and modeling for Kerr’s Department store in downtown Oklahoma City. During World War II, she worked at the dental clinic at Will Rogers Airfield. And, ultimately, she spent 33-years working with American Airlines where she became the first and, at one point, only woman financial controller in the entirety of the company. Additionally, Lavonne was a proud member of the Executive Women’s Association, where she also served as the President for one term.
Traveling was a passion for Lavonne and throughout her life, she had the privilege of exploring the globe. She enjoyed returning with gifts from far off places such as Japan, Greece, and Israel and sharing stories of her travels. That said, she loved nothing more than coming home to spend time with her friends and family. She fostered many close friendships throughout the years, especially enjoying card games with “The Girls” and spent many days in gyms and under the sun watching her daughters and grandchildren play various sports.

Lavonne also had a powerful relationship with the Lord. She was a longtime member of New Hope United Methodist Church serving in the children’s ministry and the Mary Martha Circle. She found joy in serving as a children’s leader in Bible Study Fellowship for many years.

Lavonne was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Jack Hatfield, her mother, father and sisters Maurine Carver and Deanna McCall. She is survived by her sister Alzada Middleton; daughters Janelle Hillemeyer (Fred) and Jackie Dawes (Richard); grandsons Kevin Lewis (Sarah) and Zac Warner (Jennifer); granddaughters Anji Ison (Roger), Joanna Bowzer (Nicholas Leiting), Becky Warner and Samantha Dawes; great grandsons Jack, Gabe, Jaxen and Carter; great granddaughters Drue, Olivia and Dylan; 3 nephews and 3 nieces.

For those who wish to attend, a viewing will be held Thursday May 10, at Vondel L. Smith & Son, 13125 N. MacArthur from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The memorial celebration of her life will be on May 11, 2018 at New Hope United Methodist Church,11600 North Council Road at 2:00 p.m. The private family interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery that morning at 11:00 a.m.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Excell Hospice and Porter Assisted Living at the Baptist Retirement Village for taking excellent care of Lavonne throughout the various stages of her life and especially the love, care and concern during her final week.
