I am so sorry for the family’s loss. Death is one of the hardest trials to cope with. May you find comfort from the future promise recorded in Revelation 21:4 which says “he [God] will wipe out every tear from their eyes and death will be no more.” We can be certain God will fulfill the words from his word the Bible.

Where does one begin when sharing a 49 year friendship with Jack? I first met Jack in 1970 when we were both freshmen at Rider High School in Wichita Falls, Texas. I last spoke to Jack a month ago following his receiving a stint. Early in our meeting, we discovered our families were friends going back two generations as Jack's grandmother was present when my mother was born in Mankins, Texas in April of 1927. I think our grandparents would be happy to know of our friendship.
Jack was always a dependable buddy. In high school, Jack and I went fishing, played sports, chased girls, and had a lot of fun. We loved to shoot guns, hang out with mutual friends, and live a care free life.
We both went to Midwestern State University where Jack and I decided to join the same fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon. Jack was well liked by everyone, and was appreciated for his kicking ability in football games against other fraternities.
In 1978, we both transferred to West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas. I transferred to complete a degree in economics; Jack transferred to walk on the football team. At that time, West Texas State was the defending Missouri Valley Conference champions in football, had two players who would later be drafted into the NFL, and were not necessarily in need of walk on players. Jack showed them what he was made of----
Jack would visit me at my apartment during the semester and show his forearms covered in bruises from blocking drills. He worked hard physically and during the spring game, stopped Bo Robison for no gain two plays in a row from the 2 yard line. Jack proved to himself he could play college football, while Bo was later drafted by the Detroit Lions as a running back. Carl Birdsong was on that team and played several seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals. Jack made a team composed of tough guys---
After college, we both returned to Wichita Falls. Jack was best man at more weddings than anyone I know because so many considered him their best friend. Jack was my best man in 1980.
I remember when Jack met Pam at a "rig raising party." Jack talked about Pam and I could tell this girl was special. He always said he wanted a girl who would enjoy the outdoors like him. Jack hit the jackpot with Pam. When their first son was born, Jack came by my mother's house holding the baby and was the happiest we had ever seen him. Jack loved his wife and sons.
Unlike so many friends from high school and college that lose contact with one another, Jack and I stayed in touch. Time moves on, things change, but Jack was always the dependable friend he was in high school. Life without him won't be the same; however, Jack would be disappointed if we didn't continue to live and love life as he did.
So long Jack, not goodbye, until we meet in heaven. I'm sure you will be one of the first to greet me, show me around, and that friendship that began between our families in the 1920s will continue for eternity.
