Rachel Witten-Whelan died unexpectedly but peacefully on Saturday 8/24/19. She was born Nov. 3, 1935 in Greensburg, KY. Her life was full and well lived. Rachel loved to travel. She was an avid reader, she loved to laugh and never stopped learning. She was the mother of three girls and two boys. Our Mom taught us how to cook, clean and do laundry. She also had the gift of being the best hostess and passed it along to us. Our house was an open door when we were growing up. There was always room for one more. She was a high school English teacher, a school counselor, the founder of A Chance to Change, and had a private counseling practice for the past 34 years. Our Mom battled Lupus, hemolytic anemia, and rheumatoid arthritis on a daily basis but never complained. She continued her work up until her death. She loved her clients. She was able to fight her physical ailments with the help of the Lord and many of us spent time in prayer with her. She will be missed by so many. Rachel was preceded in death by her parents Leon and Lillie Atwell, and her husband Michael J. Whelan. She is survived by her sister Carol Teague, her daughters Janna Morris and husband David, Cyndy Janssen and husband Tom, Kim Schlecht and husband James, her sons, Sean Whelan and wife Christina and Dan Whelan and wife Adrianne; 14 grandchildren, Emily Hunnicutt, David Janssen, Elliot Janssen, Jacob Morris, Joey Morris, Hilary Cox, Andrew Schlecht, Ethan Schlecht, Jillian Harsha, Matthew Whelan, Pierce Whelan, Nicolette Whelan, Owen Whelan and Luke Whelan; and 7 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to OMRF Lupus Research ( A memorial service to remember Rachel will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, August 29, 2019 at Church of the Servant, 14343 N. You were are a very special lady who helped my husband and I through so much. We loved u so much and I loved to attend sessions with you and u always made me feel better about myself. U are a big reason my husband and I are where we are today. I had screwed up badly and unlike the others u never blamed me or made me feel bad for my shortcomings. You always had a smile and told me u loved me when i left. You are very special. See u again one day!!

Dear Jana, Cindy and Kimmy,
Your mom was such a big influence on me as an adolescent and teen. She was beautiful, funny and so very smart! She was sort of my 'idol'. I loved her and your dad. They were good role models for me. Your grandpa, Leon Atwell, was my childhood pastor, his preaching set the foundation for my spiritual journey that lead to my salvation. May God comfort you all as you say goodbye to your precious mom, who will never be far from you because of the bond you share in Jesus.
Here are some hugs and tears and laughter as we all look forward to being together again someday.

Dear Kim, Janna and Cyndy--your mom was a treasure. We were all lucky to know her and grateful to have her as a part of our family. Her wisdom and ability to give great advice with grace and tact helped all of us navigate the many challenges of a large and dynamic tribe. She and my Dad were a delight to watch; they adored each other; I am grateful for the happiness he found with his Rachel.
I wish I was able to be with you all to celebrate a life that impacted so many. My thoughts have been with you this week and I will be thinking of all of you tomorrow. Thank you for sharing such a kind and wonderful woman; we are all better for having known Rachel. Much Love, MollyB.

I grew up at Shartel Church of God where Rachel Faye's father, Brother Atwell, was the preacher when I was a young girl. In junior high I babysat her daughters often. I remember her as always smiling, welcoming, laughing, and warm. She was a sweet, wonderful person! I send my sincere sympathy to her children and the rest of her family. May the Lord bring you comfort and may you enjoy sweet memories of her. Cheryl (Curry) McNeely
