Obituary

Pauline Dolores Haynes died peacefully in her sleep Saturday, January 11th, 2020. She is survived by her two sons, David and Rick Haynes, and their loving families. Pauline was a wonderful grandmother to her four grandchildren and adored by her six great-grandchildren. She was born as Pauline Dolores Hessel on January 19th, 1937, in Oklahoma City. Pauline is preceeded in death by her husband, Johnnie Haynes, her mother, father, two sisters, and three brothers.

Pauline married Johnnie on November 1st, 1952. Together they opened and operated Johnnie’s Charcoal Broiler, starting in 1971. Pauline was often referred to as “Mrs. Johnnie.” On any given day, she could be found holding court in her favorite booth at their Britton Road location. Pauline has played a pivotal role in making Johnnie’s an Oklahoma tradition.

When Pauline wasn’t at one of her restaurants, she was most likely found making the store rounds at North Park Mall. Building a connection with someone of any background was one of Pauline’s greatest attributes. She could sit and talk for hours at a time, be it a lifelong friend or a stranger she just decided to say hello to.

Most recognize Pauline for her unfailing faith in the Lord and her devotion to the church. She was a long time member of Deliverance Temple, a never ending student of the Gospel, and a true prayer warrior.

Pauline will be dearly missed by all those lucky enough to have known her.

The family will receive friends from 6pm-8pm on Friday, January 17th at Vondel L. Smith & Son Mortuary North, 1315 N MacArthur Blvd.

A Celebration of her Life will be 12:30pm, Saturday, January 18th at Life Church - Broadway & Britton located at 9001 N. Broadway Ext..

The family asks that you consider making a donation to your local church or your favorite charity.

Johnnie's on Britton Road has been our home away from home since it opened in 1971. We have enjoyed our visits with Pauline for a number of years. She always had an encouraging word and never failed to express her very strong faith in God. We will miss her so very much.

To my White American Mother.
Well, here we go! It feels like it was yesterday that I walked into your place on 33rd and Broadway without any knowledge of the language and ask for a job, still remember that afternoon when I had an interview with Mr. Johnny and he told me that I could start the very next day at 9 am, to be a busser girl . On the course of my first week after 3 days I met the so called Mrs. Jonnie, the one that everyone was afraid and for sure very respectful, the one that never was afraid to say what she thought and sure correct you right at the very moment without sending any notice or what we call now days no filter... I still remember when Ms. Pauline came to me one afternoon as I was clocking out and asked me: So Honey where are you from? And I answered with butterflies in my stomach: I am from Brasil, and she asked, is that near to the United States? And I barely answered with my very poor English, no mamm , it’s south , very far from here. And she replied: so your mother is not here or around. And I said , no my mom is very far and I do miss her . She looked straight in my eyes and ask me : Can I be your American mother from now on, I would love to have you as my daughter .
And from that day on Ms. Pauline (and the whole family) took me under their wings
and treated me like I have always been a part of them. This lady has such a special place in my heart and in my life that is kind of hard to describe, those late phone calls to check if I made home ok after a late class at UCO, the messages during the week stating: Honey this is your mother I am worried about you , last time I saw you you’re too skinny, you need to eat, let’s get together so I can feed you.
Years went by, and our lives got in different routes but never got to south enough that we forgot about each other.
Mother, this is your daughter. Please call me: never went more than 30 min. and she would be returning my call with some words of wisdom comforting me in any way she could . I remember those afternoons that spent together with Rosemary her sister (whom who was always making fun of my English and actually teaching me on how to pronounce some of the words ) but life seemed so simple then because all we did was sit around laughing and gossiping about the crazy things that always happened at work.
I could be sitting here telling one story after another about this beautiful person who was larger in kindness than life itself.
Mother: I just need to say one thing, one more time, and there is nothing that you haven’t heard before, nothing that has been omitted from you. There are not words to describe your character of beauty, kindness, thoughtfulness , loving and caring. I will always love you , and be so thankful and grateful for all that you and your family have done for me. You will
Always be called my white American mother ( with all respect)
You’re a bomb.
I love you to the moon and back. The greatest felling is to know that God is happier now to have someone of your caliber next to him. I hope our paths will cross again, and we’ll probably been sitting around and laughing like so many other time. Mother I already miss you.
Love you always.
