Obituary

Johnathan David Brainard, of Coyle Oklahoma, went to be with Jesus on Sunday, May 17, 2020. He was born to Molly Gaile Ward Jenkins and David Lee Brainard on May 27,1995. After graduating from high school, he went to a semester of college, but he decided it was not for him. He said he was not going to pay good money for someone to try to indoctrinate him into socialism. He then moved to Atlanta to be a rapper. Some thought he was crazy, but he was admired chasing his dream. He never made it big, but he was still writing songs just before he died. In Atlanta, he worked at Ideal Air for five years before coming home to Oklahoma. Just before Johnathan died, he got his general contractors license and started his own business—quite an accomplishment for a 24-year-old. He was a hard worker. There are things that some may not know about Johnathan. When the Covid outbreak started, he told his mom that he wanted give food to the homeless people. He often gave money to panhandlers. “That could be me, mom. I just want to help them.” He also wanted to pay the electric bill for his next door neighbor who is a bed-ridden invalid with two teenage sons. Despite the fact he was a troubled soul, he wanted to do good and he had a huge heart. We love him deeply and will miss his goofy laugh and and tenacious spirit. Good-bye precious young man. We will see you in heaven. He is survived by his father David Brainard, mother Molly Jenkins and stepfather Brett Jenkins, sister Ariel Braswell, her husband George and their two boys, Finn and Kennedy, and grandparents, Carlton and Gaile Ward. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lee and Delberta Brainard and his great grandmother, Doris Murphy. He was laid to rest at Memorial Park Cemetery on Friday, May 22, 2020 in a family graveside service.

At a Christmas gathering several years ago, David paired us up in a mentoring relationship. I’m so grateful for that experience. Johnathan was a hard worker with dreams and ambitions. I was honored to be able to help him as he pursued his HVAC license and starting his company. We were proud of the way that he dug in and passed his tests and struck out on his own. I related to his independent spirit and the need to be his own boss and I will miss our conversations.

One of my favorite memories of Johnathan is his sweet smile. When he was a kid, if you saw that red hair shining in the sunshine you knew a mischievous grin was close by. He could disarm you with his smile and always make you smile back. I remember playing games at Mom’s house - I know she loved having everyone there. Just having fun and enjoying being together.

Johnathan loved playing games. I will never forget playing cards with you for hours or acquire and how good you were at it. But my favorite memory of you will always be watching you hold Finn and talk to him. I can still hear your voice over my car speaker saying “HEY FINN!” I told him just this morning that you love him so much and nothing can ever take that away.
