Obituary for Leonard Joseph Sparagowski

Leonard Joseph Sparagowski left us on the morning of Monday, November 2, 2020 at the age of 99. He was born September 1, 1921 to Stephen and Constance Sparagowski in Toledo, Ohio. At the age of only nine months old, Leonard’s family consisting of his parents and 15 children moved to Poland where they could settle their family estate, but traveling with 15 children was not an easy task. So the family remained in Poland for 15 years, before returning to the United States. When he was 20 years old, Len joined the US Army. While he was passing through Oklahoma City heading to war, Len attended a party where he met the love of his life, Lillian Cecelia Reding. Len went off to war and quickly returned to Oklahoma City where he married Lillian Reding on April 19, 1944 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the love story began. That same year on November 5, they welcome their first son, Travis Jerome Sparagowski, and six years later they welcomed their second son, Randy Dale Sparagowski. Now that their family was complete, the adventures could begin. They loved to go camping in Sulphur, Oklahoma and carried on this tradition for 70 years. Len was very well known as a magician and he enjoyed teaching many children the art of magic. He performed at numerous birthday parties, where he amazed many, many children with his talents as a magician and he also performed at the Governor’s Mansion for parties. In the 1960s, Len and Lillian began dressing up as Santa and Mrs. Claus. The two lived on SW 40th St., where they had a large sleigh with reindeer in the front yard. The spectacle drew up to 20,000 children each year. They counted the number of children, by how many candy canes were given out, and this tradition lasted 10 years. They also did extensive traveling including Europe and the Southern Isles, including Trinidad. Len and Lillian had an abundance of adventures, too many to name. He will be forever missed, but always in our hearts.
