Obituary for Michael Hershel Mowdy D.o.
Dr. Michael Hershel Mowdy was returned to his Heavenly Father on Nov. 6, 2020 at home surrounded by loved ones. He was born Nov.17, 1945 in Pawhuska, OK to Dorathy Louise Mowdy and Mike J. Mowdy. He is survived by his wife Jeanne, daughter Kelli Mowdy and her husband Michael McNicholas, son Ryan C. Mowdy, and grandson Spencer Mowdy-McNicholas. He is also survived by his sister Vickie Moore and her husband Rick Moore, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Michael Jason Mowdy.
He grew up in Oklahoma City and graduated from Moore High School and Oklahoma State University with a degree in Physiology. He served in the U.S. Army as a medical laboratory technologist receiving an honorable discharge.
While at Oklahoma State University he met his future wife Jeanne Naifeh. They were married July 18, 1970 in Tulsa, OK, and recently celebrated their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary.
Dr. Mowdy was in the inaugural class of the Oklahoma College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Tulsa, OK. Following graduation, he interned at Normandy Osteopathic Hospital in St. Louis, MO and then completed a 3-year residency in internal medicine at Dallas Osteopathic Hospital. After successful completion of his residency, Dr. Mowdy was accepted into the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center Cardiology Fellowship program. Following the cardiology fellowship, he established a successful private practice in Oklahoma City in 1983. He was board certified in internal medicine and cardiology with added qualification in interventional cardiology. He was a member of the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association, American Osteopathic Association, and the American College of Osteopathic Internists.
The Oklahoma Osteopathic Association honored Dr. Mowdy with the Outstanding and Distinguished Service Award at the 115th Annual Convention in 2015. This award is given to an osteopathic physician who is an outstanding asset to patients, physicians, hospitals, medical students and professional organizations.
He was also a member of the Oklahoma chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.
In his spare time Dr. Mowdy enjoyed growing hydroponic vegetables, researching genealogy, playing with his young grandson, Spencer, spending time with his family, and exploring different countries with his wife, Jeanne.
In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, a private family service will be held at Episcopal Church of the Resurrection followed by interment at Sunset Memorial Park in Norman. The family would like to thank Mercy Hospice for their compassionate care in his last few days. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the following in his honor: Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, 13112 N. Rockwell, Oklahoma City, OK, 73142; the American Cancer Society, 6525 N Meridian Ave STE 110, Oklahoma City, OK 73116 or the charity of the donor’s choice.
