Ruth at St. Paul's

I knew Ruth in her later years in Black River, in the days when she always gave me a hug and then asked who I was.  God's angels looked after Ruth when Alzheimer's disease made her less and less able to safely look after herself.  One of the human angels who looked after her was Father Andrew Mulvaney, the pastor of St. Paul's Catholic Church.  After Ruth was no longer able to drive, she walked all over the village, and sometimes Father would give her a ride in his car.  He invited her to come to church at St. Paul's since it was close to her home, and she attended mass for a time.  Father always made sure that someone sat with Ruth so she felt welcome.  Although I serve as the musician at St. Rita's, St. Paul's sister church in Deferiet, I witnessed this act of grace when I substituted for the organist at St.  Paul's, and of course I always sat with her for a bit before mass began and identified myself as her former neighbor's daughter-in-law (her neighbor long ago was Sally Pelkey, and Ruth attended Sally's funeral.)  I liked Ruth, and since Sally also suffered from Alzheimer's, I was well aware of the quirks of dementia.  May God bless those loved ones whom she has left behind, and may God bless those who are researching to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease.
