Obituary for Betty Cole (Cole)

Betty Ellen Cole, the only child of Grayson G. and Mabel Cole was born July 22, 1926 in Baltimore, Maryland, and passed from this life on July 13, 2016 in Oklahoma City.

Betty grew up in Baltimore and attended the University of Maryland where she obtained a bachelor’s degree. While in Baltimore she served in the Coast Guard Women’s Auxiliary during World War II. She was married to Nicholas Pollis of New York City in 1950 and a year later they had Betty’s first son, Micael. During the following years, Betty taught junior high school mathematics at several schools in both Baltimore, and Oklahoma City. She married a second time to Peter Chandler, and together they had two sons, Peter and Paul. After her second marriage ended in 1967, Betty moved with her sons back to Oklahoma City, where she completed a master’s degree and earned a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Oklahoma while doing neurological research for the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation. Thereafter she taught courses in psychology at Rose State College until her retirement from teaching in 1990.

Betty was quick to let you know she was an Easterner, but would just as quickly admit to being an adopted Okie. Betty loved art, music, British sit-coms, gardening, sports cars, and she relished an off-color joke upon occasion. She also was an active member of the Oklahoma City Engineers’ Club for many years, and did volunteer work for Travelers Aid of OKC and other charities. She traveled to Europe a number of times and loved Greek and Mediterranean cuisine.

She is survived by sons Micael and Paul Chandler and granddaughter Micah McCumber, all of Oklahoma City; son Peter and granddaughter Claire Chandler of Bakersfield, California; grandsons James Anderson and Zachary Chandler and granddaughter Kyleigh Chandler, all of Denver, Colorado.

Memorial Services for Betty will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday July 16, 2016 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 5401 N. Brookline, in Oklahoma City.
