David Michael Puente, 65, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on March 26, 2018. He was born in Oklahoma City, OK to Solidad “Chole” Lopez & George Puente. After graduating from Capitol Hill High School, he attended OCCC, then graduated from UCO with a degree in Criminology. He started his career as a night counselor at the Oklahoma Halfway House in the early 70’s, and in the latter part of the 70’s worked for Mable Bassett Womens Prison as a correctional officer & Parole Hearings supervisor. Beginning in 1979, he worked at FCI El Reno Federal Prison as a corrections officer, and took part in moving Cuban exiles to Atlanta, GA. He continued to work there until a rare blood vessel deficiency caused him to take an early retirement in 1986. Afterwards, he continued working in the criminal justice system, first as the Director of Operations at the Oklahoma Carver Center, then as a night counselor with the Oklahoma County Juvenile Shelter. Starting in the late 90’s he transitioned into health care job field. He worked at Home Health Care as well as MedRide Health Services, which provided seniors with rides to doctor’s appointments. In 2006 he accepted a job with Weed & Seed OKC, a branch of the Department of Justice where he acted a supervisor of graffiti removal. Unfortunately, his working career ended in 2009 with his last job at Friends of 10th street due to his failing health.

In addition to his working career, David was exceptionally active in his community, most notably with LULAC for 14 years where he served as president in 2006, Capitol Hill Civic Group, Hispanic Chamber, Citizen Oversight Board, Neighborhood Alliance Board of Directors, Social Justice of OKC, and Adopt a Park as an advocate for the Manuel Perez Park plaza & monument.
