For those friends and family wishing to send floral arrangements for Mrs. Monjarás, we suggest waiting, until the memorial service has been scheduled.

Lucy Monjaras passed from this earthly life into eternal rest on Monday, September 28, 2020 at the age of 97. Born to Higinio and Natividad (Jaime) Valencia in Oklahoma City on October 26, 1922, Lucy grew up in the Walnut Grove neighborhood and would live her entire life in South Oklahoma City. She graduated from Central High School and later worked in the Little Flower Catholic Church print shop. At the annual Church carnival, she caught the eye of Pedro (Pete) Monjaras. As it was meant to be, Pete and Lucy married in 1950, and shared 61 loving years together until his passing in 2011. They attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church for more than 50 years, where Lucy was active in the Altar Society and, with Pete, served as Eucharistic Ministers. And now they are reunited in joy and peace. After she married, Lucy devoted her life to creating a comfortable and caring home for Pete and their two sons. Lucy’s kind heart and abiding faith made her a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, godmother, neighbor and friend. Her life was the embodiment of the insightful quote, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” Lucy was celebrated at every family Christmas holiday dinner for bringing her famous homemade lemon meringue pies—each made with great love.

Lucy was preceded in death by her:
parents, Higinio and Natividad Valencia;
husband of 61 years, Pete Monjaras;
brothers: Felix, Alfonso and Albert Valencia;
sister, Esperanza “Hope” Garay.

Lucy is survived by her:
Brother, Jose Valencia of Norman, OK;
Son, Stephen Monjaras and his wife, Lori-Ann;
Son, Edward Monjaras and his wife, Barbara;
Grandchildren: Christopher and Theresa Monjaras; Danielle, Vicente and Milo Hernandez, all of Albuquerque, New Mexico;
As well as many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staff and residents of Meadowlake Estates for providing Lucy with care and friendship in her later years.

Viewing will be at the funeral home 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM Thursday and Friday evening. A family graveside service will be held at Resurrection Cemetery. After the pandemic crisis, a Mass and Celebration of Lucy’s life will be scheduled.

On behalf of my mother Dora Mesa and all the other surviving Mesa family, we want to send our heartfelt condolences on the loss of your beloved Lucy.
My memories of her were when Mom would pick up her sons and drive them to school. Later at Sacred Heart I remember her beautiful smile and all the warmth of her being shown through her grace.
We know she is resting with her husband, parents and all family in the Heaven and enjoying the Love of God and all his angels.

Dear Judy, Thank you for your condolences and for sharing your memories of my Mom. She always spoke so highly of your mother, and was grateful to her for taking Steve and me to school. We were all blessed that she was with us for these many years. Thank you. (Ed Monjaras)

Dear Beverly, Melissa, Kyle, Michelle and Matt: Thank you so much for arranging the planting of the memorial tree for my Mom. She would have loved the idea that a tree was planted for her. Though the time in which she met and spoke with you was brief, she would often ask about Gene and Bartie, and all of you. We are grateful for your kind tribute to her life.

We are so sorry for the great loss of Lucy! She was so very kind and such a special lady! We really enjoyed our visits with her last year. I was sad that we could not visit because of COVID. I did mail her a letter a couple of months ago letting her know how much she was loved and how we missed seeing her. She was a blessing to all the family! May all the family be blessed with comfort and peace. You will continue to be in our hearts and prayers. Love, Myra & family

Ed Monjaras Posted at 08:34pm

Dear Myra and Phil, thank you for your words of sympathy and comfort. My Mom would tell me over the phone about your visits with her. She was so appreciative of your coming to see her (and for the card you sent) and so are we. The family was blessed that she was with us for many years. We are comforted knowing that she is reunited with my Dad and all the members of our family's Greatest Generation.
